Accelerating Patient-Centric Innovation: Lessons from a Smart Nose Hospital Pilot
Focus Areas

Reimagining Healthcare: Access for All

Objective: Explore innovations making healthcare inclusive, affordable and impactful worldwide.

Introduction: the Problem

Hospitalized, bedridden patients often face significant hygiene-related care gaps due to manual, schedule-based checks and stretched clinical staff. This can lead to discomfort, increased infection risk, and diminished patient experience, especially for those unable to request help due to post-operational or mental conditions or lacking care from relatives. Recognizing this challenge, EPAM Lithuania held an Innovation hackathon and partnered with St. Rokas Hospital in Vilnius to co-create a Smart Nose – a connected sensor and machine-learning-based hygiene monitoring solution. The project aimed to detect hygiene needs in real time using air sensors and wireless connectivity, sending instant alerts to staff and enabling rapid, responsive care.

Collaboration Offer

In this talk EPAM shares practical insights and lessons learnt from a collaborative hospital hygiene monitoring initiative in Lithuania. Developed in partnership with clinicians and made real by EPAM designers, engineers and innovators in the region, the project evolved from an innovation hackathon to a live pilot in 2024-2025, operating autonomously in real hospital environment. The talk offers best practices in unlocking clinicians-driven innovation, hardware + software design and development specifics, stakeholder engagement, navigating the challenges of implementing and adopting new technology in regulated healthcare environments. EPAM welcomes the healthcare and life sciences practitioners and innovation community to join an open conversation, share insights, explore new scenarios, and identify ways how advanced technbology can address common challenges and improve patient care.
